What It’s Like to Write Financial Copy – Part 1 (Why Do It In The First Place?)
My entire copywriting career, I dreamed of breaking into the financial publishing niche. For me, it was the ultimate goal. Nailing a financial copywriting gig would convince the world – and myself – that I had finally “arrived”…
…That I hit the pinnacle of success.
Maybe you feel this way too. A lot of copywriters do. We see our financial copywriting counterparts writing promos that rake in millions in sales – and generate royalty checks large enough to buy a second home. Who wouldn’t want a piece of that kind of action? I know I certainly did!
The benefits of writing in the financial publishing world are potentially off the charts. You get to…
• Write VSL (video sales letter) scripts and long-copy sales pages.
Okay, this may not be appealing if you HATE writing long copy. (I happen to love it.) And let me tell you, there’s something just plain fun about writing VSL scripts. It gives you the chance to take “writing conversationally” to a whole new level.
Plus, you get to be a part of filming the VSL, which is quite an experience. There’s just something special about seeing your words on paper being brought to life right before your eyes.
• Be a part of a team.
Teamwork is HUGE in financial publishing. You’ve heard it takes a village to raise a child? Well, it also takes a village to put out a financial promo! You’re never left to figure things out on your own. There are always more experienced financial copywriters – along with investors and publishers – ready to lend a hand.
• Earn royalties.
Nearly EVERY financial publisher offers royalties to their copywriters. Most of the time, royalties are limited to the long form copy – the VSL scripts and sales pages. But still… the opportunity is there to make some darn good money.
Let’s say your contract gives you 2% royalties on sales generated by your promo. If the VSL goes viral and generates $10 million in sales – yes, I’ve seen it happen for some experienced financial copywriters – your bank account gets a nice $200,000 boost.
Now, creating a VSL that rakes in millions in sales takes skill, experience, the right market conditions, and a fair bit of luck. But the possibility for a financial windfall – one that could change your life – is definitely there.
Those are the reasons WHY financial publishing was so appealing to me. In Part 2, I’ll show you how I broke into this coveted niche – and how you can too.
